Wayne Rooney has delivered a scathing assessment of Manchester United’s squad, claiming the players look “lost and scared” and suggesting only Bruno Fernandes and Kobbie Mainoo should remain beyond this season. The former United captain believes a major squad overhaul is needed if the club wants to return to the top.

Speaking on the Stick to Football podcast, Rooney expressed his frustration with the current crop of players, insisting they lack character and accountability. “They look lost. They look scared,” Rooney said. “Bruno is the one who keeps producing, and Kobbie has potential, but the rest need to go.”

Rooney’s comments come as Manchester United prepare for their Europa League clash against Real Sociedad. Despite a chance to progress in Europe, the former striker feels the squad is far from good enough to compete at the highest level. He believes around 10-15 players should be shown the door this summer.

The likes of Victor Lindelöf, Christian Eriksen, and Jonny Evans are expected to leave when their contracts expire, while high-earners like Casemiro, Antony, and Jadon Sancho could also be sold. However, with many of these players on huge wages, finding buyers could prove difficult for the club.

Rooney’s criticism echoes the frustrations of co-owner Jim Ratcliffe, who recently admitted that the club has made expensive mistakes in the transfer market. Ratcliffe pointed to signings like Casemiro, Andre Onana, and Rasmus Hojlund as part of the club’s past failures that need to be addressed.

“There’s a culture at the club where it’s too easy to lose games,” Rooney added. “Players come out with the usual ‘onto the next one’ nonsense. Just show some character and fight on the pitch.”

While Rooney’s brutal verdict highlights the need for change, some bright spots remain. Youngster Amad Diallo has impressed this season, while recent signings Leny Yoro and Manuel Ugarte could be given more time to develop under manager Ruben Amorim.

With Manchester United enduring one of their worst seasons in recent history, the pressure is mounting on the club’s hierarchy to make significant changes in the summer transfer window.
