Iwobi, a former England youth player, switched allegiance to Nigeria, while Bassey, born in Italy and raised in England, embraced the chance to play for his parents’ homeland.

Both players were part of the Super Eagles squad that secured a second-place finish at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations in Côte d’Ivoire.

Iwobi sees Nigeria’s recent successes as an inspiration for other Nigerian players born abroad. Speaking to Sky Sports, he emphasized that the team’s growth could attract talent from across Europe.

“If we keep progressing and winning, it’ll draw players from England, Spain, and Germany back to their Nigerian roots,” he noted, adding that once he felt the connection, there was no turning back.

Bassey echoed Iwobi’s sentiment, highlighting the overwhelming love he receives from Nigerian fans. He shared, “The love is crazy, especially from my family. Although I didn’t grow up in Nigeria, each visit brings a unique connection, like fulfilling a family dream.”

Bassey also hopes their journey encourages others to explore their heritage, emphasizing that understanding one’s roots goes beyond football.
