Following Erik ten Hag’s dismissal, United has appointed Ruud van Nistelrooy as interim manager, but negotiations with Amorim have been swift, with Sporting holding out for a release clause of around €10 million (£8.3m) to allow him make the switch.

Amorim has been in high demand across Europe, with Liverpool, Barcelona, and Juventus previously eyeing his services.

Amorim’s coaching career has been marked by rapid success, leading Sporting to their first league title in nearly two decades in 2021 and another dominant season last year.

Sporting currently sits six points clear at the top of the Portuguese league, reflecting the coach’s tactical strengths. Amorim’s style often includes a flexible 3-4-3 or 3-4-2-1 formation that prioritizes ball control, complemented by direct, dynamic forward play.

Under his guidance, players like Viktor Gyokeres have thrived, with Gyokeres netting 12 goals in nine games this season.

Known for developing young talent, Amorim has elevated players like Pedro Porro and Nuno Mendes to Europe’s elite, a trend he could continue with United’s promising youth.

Despite retiring from playing at 32 due to injuries, Amorim transitioned swiftly to coaching, beginning at Braga before joining Sporting for a hefty transfer fee.

His approach both on and off the field has impressed, with his fluency in English and his calm, media-friendly demeanor adding to his appeal.

In his 268 matches managed, Amorim boasts a 72.39% win rate, a statistic that speaks to his effectiveness.

Should Amorim step into the pressure-laden role at United, his tactical prowess, trust in youth, and leadership qualities could be key to reestablishing the Red Devils among Europe’s top clubs.
