Known previously as a disciple of Pep Guardiola, Arteta admitted Mourinho is a manager he admires deeply, acknowledging the impact Mourinho has had on him since they met when Arteta was 15.
Speaking in a press conference on Tuesday, Arteta described Mourinho as “someone to admire,” praising the former Premier League manager’s influence and his success across multiple countries.
When asked specifically about Carragher’s comments, Arteta clarified that while he respects the opinion, he prefers not to be compared to other managers.
“I don’t talk about myself,” Arteta stated, noting that his focus is solely on doing what he believes is best for his team’s success rather than emulating others.
Carragher’s comparison came following Arsenal’s recent 2-2 draw with Liverpool, where he noted a shift in Arteta’s tactics that he felt mirrored Mourinho’s defensive approach.
