Graeme Souness has criticized Manchester United’s ownership for their significant summer spending, totaling £130 million on three players he deems “not good enough” for the storied club.

As Manchester United endures one of their most challenging seasons, currently sitting 14th in the Premier League, Souness has not held back in his assessment.
The club recently parted ways with manager Erik ten Hag, replacing him with Ruben Amorim, who will take charge on November 11. Until then, interim boss Ruud van Nistelrooy will manage the team, facing tough matches ahead.
Souness specifically pointed to the signings of Manuel Ugarte, Matthijs De Ligt, and Joshua Zirkzee as inadequate. United acquired Ugarte for £50 million from Paris Saint-Germain, while De Ligt cost £45 million and Zirkzee £36.5 million. According to Souness, these investments reflect poorly on the club’s transfer strategy.
He remarked, “They brought in Manuel Ugarte, Matthijs De Ligt, and Joshua Zirkzee. If they think those players are good enough for United, they’re wrong.”
He emphasized that the spending habits indicate a failure to understand the club’s needs, especially given the quality of players currently at their disposal.
Souness believes that the challenges Amorim will face at Old Trafford are immense, stating, “It’s a monster job to take on Manchester United at the moment.” He noted that even the best managers would struggle in the current environment.
Furthermore, Souness criticized the management for their handling of Ten Hag’s situation over the summer. He felt the club’s indecision and their outreach to other managerial candidates undermined Ten Hag’s authority, saying, “They cut his legs off.”
The legendary player concluded that Manchester United is at one of its lowest points in Premier League history, facing a difficult path forward as they strive to regain their former glory.
