Ruben Amorim’s arrival at Manchester United may spell uncertainty for some of the club’s top stars, with England legend Alan Shearer suggesting that Marcus Rashford could be among the players facing scrutiny.

Amorim, recently confirmed as United’s new manager, officially takes charge after the upcoming international break on November 11.

Amorim emerged as United’s preferred candidate following the decision to part ways with Erik ten Hag earlier this week.

Ten Hag, despite delivering two trophies for United, saw his tenure end amid the club’s struggles, with United finishing eighth last season and slipping to 14th before his departure.

Shearer believes Amorim has a major task ahead, particularly when it comes to assessing the squad.

“He’ll need to figure out who he wants to keep and who he wants to move on,” Shearer told Betfair. He added that Rashford, who has struggled with form, might be on the list of players Amorim considers letting go.

Rashford, a United academy product, saw his goal tally drop significantly, netting just eight times last season after scoring 30 the year before.

This season has offered little improvement, with just one league goal to his name. “There’s no question of Rashford’s ability,” Shearer continued, “but Amorim needs to decide if he can reignite that spark and restore his confidence.”

Reflecting on Amorim’s credentials, Shearer acknowledged that his success at Sporting Lisbon is promising, but noted the challenge of managing United’s scale.

“Sporting are a big club, but nothing compares to the intensity of Manchester United,” Shearer said. “Amorim has a chance to elevate United, though the top four may be out of reach without significant January signings.”

Meanwhile, United found success in their first game post-Ten Hag, thrashing Leicester City 5-2 under interim manager Ruud van Nistelrooy. Van Nistelrooy, a club legend, will continue to lead until Amorim’s official arrival.

United face Chelsea at Old Trafford on Sunday, a fixture Shearer anticipates with excitement. “When a manager leaves, there’s renewed hope, which we saw in United’s Carabao Cup performance,” he noted.

“I expect an energized United, and with both teams needing defensive improvement, I predict a score draw.”

The game against Chelsea may be the start of an intriguing new chapter for United, as Amorim prepares to bring his vision to Old Trafford.

With big decisions looming, including Rashford’s future, United fans will be watching closely to see how the new boss shapes the club’s path forward.
