Nevin, familiar with Gilmour’s journey from his youth days at Rangers to his early success with Chelsea, asserts that Gilmour possesses the technical prowess to thrive in the midfields of top Premier League clubs such as Arsenal and Manchester City.
Gilmour made a promising start at Chelsea after joining the club’s academy in 2017, with his debut just two years later earning acclaim from legends like Roy Keane.
However, despite his initial promise, Gilmour struggled to secure a regular spot under Thomas Tuchel and eventually transferred to Brighton in 2022 for £10 million.
Now 23, the Scotland international has rediscovered his form in Italy, catching the eye of Nevin, who believes Gilmour’s ball control and technical skills make him well-suited for top-flight English clubs.
Reflecting on his Chelsea days, Nevin noted that Gilmour faced stiff competition from Jorginho, a player who also polarized fans but eventually proved his value.
Nevin is confident that, if placed in an ideal role, Gilmour could make an impact similar to that of midfielders like Mateo Kovacic. However, he also acknowledged that Gilmour’s limited goal contributions have restrained him from reaching a blockbuster transfer valuation.
The 23-year-old’s consistent improvement at Napoli has sparked speculation, with Nevin suggesting that Gilmour’s potential future move to a leading club “up the ladder” is simply a matter of time.
