Speaking on the I Had Trials Once podcast, Buchanan stated that despite Hasselbaink’s celebrated career as a player for Chelsea and England, he felt the ex-striker lacked basic managerial skills.
Hasselbaink joined Northampton in the 2017/18 season but was dismissed after six months following a run of nine winless games that left the club near relegation.
According to Buchanan, Hasselbaink’s methods did not foster respect among players. Buchanan was surprised by the disorganization and lack of rapport from a figure of Hasselbaink’s stature, recounting training routines that left players drained and unprepared.
Hasselbaink would often resort to lengthy drills and had unusual pre-match rituals that clashed with the players’ expectations. Despite these issues, Hasselbaink later joined Gareth Southgate’s England coaching staff for Euro 2024.
