Kylian Mbappe will not feature in France’s squad for the upcoming Nations League matches against Israel and Italy, with head coach Didier Deschamps taking full responsibility for the decision.

Despite recent recovery from a thigh injury and being named France’s captain last year, Mbappe’s recent form and availability were not enough to secure him a spot in this squad.

Deschamps stated that the decision was a “one-off” and not connected to any off-field issues.

Mbappe’s recent performances for Real Madrid, especially in losses to Barcelona and AC Milan, have drawn criticism, yet the 25-year-old had expressed willingness to join the national side.

Deschamps, however, noted that this break would allow him to provide opportunities to younger, less-experienced players who excelled in last month’s camp. Deschamps explained, “It’s my decision because it’s better this way.”

His choice also aims to build on France’s current momentum, as the team is on a three-game winning streak and is close to qualifying for the tournament’s final eight.

The French squad this month features a blend of veterans and emerging talent, including midfielders like Eduardo Camavinga and Warren Zaire-Emery and forwards Bradley Barcola and Christopher Nkunku.

Jerome Rothen, a former France winger, voiced concerns about Deschamps’ decision, suggesting it might disrupt team unity, especially considering Mbappe’s role as captain. However, Deschamps remains confident, emphasizing his responsibility and intent to foster France’s success by rotating talent.
