Nunez, who scored the opening goal in Liverpool’s 2-0 win against Aston Villa on Saturday, once again left fans divided by missing several clear opportunities.
The win has boosted Liverpool to a five-point lead at the top of the Premier League table heading into the international break.
Since his high-profile £70 million transfer to Liverpool in 2022, Nunez has contributed 36 goals and 19 assists over 110 games, but he’s also gained a reputation for missing key chances.
Last season, he notably struck the woodwork nine times and missed 27 major scoring chances, trailing only Erling Haaland in this regard. Despite his mixed record, Shearer acknowledged that Nunez’s strengths, such as his pace and his ability to unsettle defenders, make him a valuable asset for Liverpool.
During his appearance on Match of the Day, Shearer noted, “Nunez’s movement is impressive, and his pace is a great asset. He’s a player who keeps defenders busy and has developed a good partnership with Mo Salah.”
However, Shearer highlighted Nunez’s inconsistency in front of goal as a frustration, especially when he has time to think through his shots. According to Shearer, “When he has a few seconds to line up, he becomes erratic. He performs best when he acts instinctively.”
Shearer’s advice on improving finishing came down to consistent practice, though he admitted doubts about any lasting change, adding, “There will be times when it seems like he’s making big strides, scoring frequently, but he’s likely to remain streaky.”
Liverpool’s wealth of attacking talent with players like Salah, Cody Gakpo, Diogo Jota, and Luis Diaz gives manager Arne Slot options, with competition for starting spots likely to keep Nunez striving to solidify his role.
Liverpool’s manager has defended his rotation policy, allowing each forward to start based on their form and matchup, and Nunez has started only half of his 14 appearances under Slot. The Uruguayan striker’s next chance to prove himself will come after the international break when Liverpool faces Southampton on November 24.
