Van Hecke, who has been making a name for himself with a series of solid performances for Brighton, showcased his resilience in the Seagulls’ recent 2-1 victory over Manchester City.

Although Haaland opened the scoring with a scrappy goal, Van Hecke and his defensive partner Igor Julio held strong, frustrating the City forward in the closing stages. Their tussle even led to a brief scuffle, with Haaland visibly irritated by Van Hecke’s persistence.

Following the match, Van Hecke and Manchester City’s manager, Pep Guardiola, shared a brief discussion on the field. Reflecting on their exchange, Van Hecke revealed that Guardiola congratulated him, praising his strong play.

Guardiola later remarked that Van Hecke’s resilience against Haaland demonstrated the grit needed to compete with top players, commending him and Brighton on their performance.

Olij, still awaiting his Netherlands debut, joined in the camaraderie as he shared a laugh with Van Hecke over the memorable showdown with Haaland.

The light-hearted moment underscored the team spirit within the Dutch squad as they prepared for their Nations League matches against Hungary and Bosnia and Herzegovina.
