Played on a challenging pitch in Abidjan, the match started with Benin on the front foot, pressing Nigeria early on.

Benin Republic found their breakthrough in the 16th minute as Mohamed Tijani connected with a set piece, slotting the ball past Stanley Nwabali to put Benin Republic up 1-0.

The early goal shook Nigeria, who found it difficult to settle into their rhythm. The Benin defense held firm, frustrating attempts from Nigeria’s dynamic frontline, including Kelechi Iheanacho and Ademola Lookman.

Benin’s physicality was evident, and the Super Eagles struggled to create clear chances, leaving them behind as they entered halftime.

In the second half, Nigeria came out with renewed intensity. Alex Iwobi and Wilfred Ndidi worked tirelessly in midfield to regain control, pushing the team forward with quick transitions.

Benin, however, remained disciplined, keeping their defensive shape intact. As the game moved into the last quarter, Victor Osimhen became more of a focal point, with Coach Jose Peseiro bringing on additional attacking support to exploit Benin’s tiring backline.

The pivotal moment came in the 81st minute when Osimhen, Nigeria’s star striker, found himself in the right place to equalize. Latching onto a precise cross, he calmly finished, leveling the score at 1-1 to the relief of Nigerian fans.

His goal shifted momentum, and Nigeria pushed for a winner in the final moments. Despite their efforts, Benin held their ground, with goalkeeper Marcel Dandjinou pulling off a critical save in the dying minutes to deny Nigeria victory.

The game ended in a 1-1 draw, a result that keeps Nigeria’s AFCON qualification hopes alive but also highlights areas needing improvement as they aim for success in Morocco. For Benin, the hard-earned point boosts their confidence and sustains their own qualification ambitions.
