Despite already securing their spot in the tournament, Akuneto cautioned against underestimating the importance of this ‘dead rubber’ match, describing such games as deceptively challenging.
The experienced coach praised the Super Eagles for forming a cohesive team, citing their resilience in earning a 1-1 draw against Benin Republic during Matchday 5. That result guaranteed Nigeria’s qualification for the African football spectacle in Morocco.
He emphasized the team’s fighting spirit, highlighting their ability to rally back and secure crucial results.
Akuneto also noted the potential pitfalls of matches where stakes are lower. “Dead rubbers are always dangerous because players often struggle with motivation,” he stated.
He recommended that Coach Eguavoen use the opportunity to rotate the squad, giving fringe players a chance to showcase their abilities while resting key figures.
As Nigeria prepares to face Rwanda at the Godswill Akpabio Stadium, Akuneto’s insights serve as a timely reminder of the importance of maintaining focus, even when the pressure is off.
The Super Eagles aim to finish their qualifiers on a high note, continuing their impressive journey to the 2025 AFCON.
