In a dramatic twist of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers, Rwanda’s Amavubi pulled off a stunning 2-1 victory over Nigeria’s Super Eagles on Monday night. Despite their heroic performance at the Godswill Akpabio Stadium in Uyo, Rwanda’s dreams of making the tournament were dashed as results elsewhere sealed their fate.
Rwanda’s German head coach, Torsten Spittler, had boldly declared victory as his side’s only goal in the so-called “dead rubber” fixture. True to his word, the Amavubi delivered a disciplined and inspired performance to topple the star-studded Super Eagles, whose squad includes some of Africa’s top footballing talents.
Samuel Chukwueze gave the Super Eagles the lead early in the second half, sending the Uyo crowd into raptures. However, Rwanda struck back swiftly. Angel Mutsinzi equalized with a header following a set-piece, and Innocent Nshuti completed the comeback with a well-executed goal 15 minutes from time.
Despite the historic victory, Spittler was visibly torn during the post-match press conference.
“We came, we saw, we conquered. To beat Nigeria on their home turf is almost unheard of. Yet, despite this monumental achievement, we won’t be in Morocco. It’s bittersweet,” Spittler said, referencing Rwanda’s FIFA ranking gap with Nigeria, who sit around 30th while Rwanda languishes in the 160s.
Rwanda’s hopes of qualifying rested on the outcome of the Libya-Benin match in Benghazi. A goalless draw meant Benin Republic secured the second spot in Group D, joining Nigeria in the AFCON finals. Rwanda’s earlier 1-0 home loss to Libya on Matchday 5 ultimately proved costly.
Spittler acknowledged the significance of that result:
“We could have secured qualification with a win against Libya. Fate, it seems, had other plans.”
Nigeria vs Rwanda
Spittler’s tactical approach was pivotal in neutralizing Nigeria’s attacking threats. By doubling up on key players like Victor Osimhen and Samuel Chukwueze, Rwanda frustrated their opponents and capitalized on key moments.
Despite the disappointment of the loss, Nigeria finished top of Group D, with Benin following as runners-up. Both teams will now prepare for the AFCON finals in Morocco, leaving Rwanda to reflect on what could have been.
While Rwanda will not feature in the 2025 AFCON, their victory over Nigeria is a testament to their growth and potential. Spittler summed it up best:
“This result shows that Rwanda can compete with the best. It’s a foundation we must build upon.”
As the Super Eagles and Benin Republic look ahead to Morocco, Rwanda can take pride in their valiant effort, even if their journey ends here.
