Chelsea’s forward Christopher Nkunku, despite an impressive tally of 10 goals in 17 appearances this season, has found himself on the sidelines for much of the campaign under new manager Enzo Maresca.

French football legend Emmanuel Petit believes the reason lies in Chelsea’s future ambitions, specifically their plans for Estevao Willian, the 17-year-old Brazilian sensation who is set to join the squad next season.
Nkunku joined Chelsea from RB Leipzig 18 months ago, and while his performances in cup competitions have been notable, he has struggled to cement a starting position in the Premier League.
Injuries and the emergence of other talents like Cole Palmer have limited his opportunities. Manager Maresca has also shown a preference for Nicolas Jackson as the focal point of Chelsea’s attack.
Petit, speaking to Casino Hawks, suggested that Nkunku’s diminished role stems from Chelsea preparing for Estevao, a player dubbed as Brazil’s next superstar. Estevao, signed for £28 million from Palmeiras, has already broken records previously held by Neymar.
According to Petit, the Chelsea board has mapped out plans to integrate the young playmaker into the squad as a key figure in the No. 10 role next season.
While Nkunku remains a valuable asset, Chelsea’s focus on long-term development might see him overshadowed by the Brazilian wonderkid.
Estevao’s technical brilliance and record-breaking performances in Brazil have made him a standout prospect, with Petit believing he has the potential to become one of Chelsea’s greatest Brazilian players.
However, Petit warned of the unpredictability of football careers, urging Chelsea to balance patience and ambition as they groom Estevao for a pivotal role.
