Edo Queens’ journey in the 2023 CAF Women’s Champions League came to a dramatic and painful halt as they suffered a 3-1 extra-time defeat to DR Congo’s TP Mazembe in the first semifinal on Tuesday. Despite taking a second-half lead, the Nigerian champions were unable to hold on, conceding a last-minute equalizer before succumbing in the additional period.

The game began as a cagey affair, with both teams struggling to find the breakthrough in a goalless first half. The deadlock was finally broken in the 65th minute when Peace Essien struck to give Edo Queens a crucial lead.

With time ticking down, Edo Queens appeared to be on the brink of advancing to the final. However, Merveille Kanjinga capitalized on a defensive lapse to equalize for TP Mazembe in the 90th minute, sending the match into extra time.

The tide turned against Edo Queens early in extra time when Comfort Folorunsho inadvertently scored an own goal in the 101st minute, putting TP Mazembe ahead. The situation worsened just before the end of the first half of extra time as Marlene Kasaj converted from the penalty spot in stoppage time to make it 3-1.

Despite their spirited efforts, Edo Queens could not find a way back into the game, as TP Mazembe secured their spot in the tournament final.

Edo Queens had impressed in the group stage, most notably with a stunning comeback victory against reigning champions Mamelodi Sundowns, where they scored two goals in stoppage time to win 2-1. However, their semifinal exit leaves them fighting for third place.

The Nigerian champions will now face the loser of the second semifinal between Morocco’s AS FAR and Egypt’s FC Masar in the third-place playoff scheduled for November 22.

While the loss is a bitter pill to swallow, Edo Queens have an opportunity to salvage some pride in the tournament by finishing on the podium. Their resilience and ability to bounce back under pressure will be tested once again as they prepare for their final outing.

For TP Mazembe, the victory is a significant milestone as they advance to the final, continuing their dream run in the competition.

Edo Queens will undoubtedly reflect on the missed opportunities and late-game lapses that cost them a spot in the final. Still, their spirited performances have cemented their status as one of Africa’s top women’s football teams.
