Manchester City’s midfield maestro Rodri has set tongues wagging after revealing he would entertain a move to Real Madrid.

Speaking in an interview with Cadena Ser’s El Larguero, the 28-year-old admitted it would be an “honour” to hear from the Spanish giants, sparking speculation about his future.

Rodri has been a cornerstone of Pep Guardiola’s all-conquering City side since his arrival from Atletico Madrid in 2019 for £62.6 million.

Over the past four years, he has played a vital role in securing 10 trophies, including four Premier League titles and the coveted Champions League.

Fresh off a stellar summer where he helped Spain clinch the Euro 2024 title, Rodri was awarded the prestigious Ballon d’Or last month, edging out Real Madrid’s Vinícius Júnior.

This accolade has further elevated his status as one of the world’s top midfielders, and Madrid, ever on the lookout for elite talent, reportedly sees him as a key target for the summer transfer window.

When asked about a potential switch to the Santiago Bernabéu, Rodri was candid.

“When Madrid, the best club in history, the most successful, call you, it is an honour, and you always have to pay attention,” he said.

His words have sparked intrigue, especially given Real Madrid’s need to bolster their midfield with players who can succeed veterans like Luka Modrić and Toni Kroos.

Despite acknowledging Madrid’s allure, Rodri was quick to emphasize his satisfaction at Manchester City. He reiterated his commitment to the Premier League champions, hinting that he might even finish his career in England.

“I have two years left on my contract; the time is approaching to start talking again. The Guardiola deal is an important incentive. I feel very valued at the club,” Rodri said.

The midfielder also highlighted his love for English football, adding:

“It could very well be a possibility to finish my career in England. It has given me everything, and I love the football there.”

However, Rodri also hinted at the pull of his homeland, acknowledging his ongoing interest in La Liga and the improving quality of Spanish clubs.

When asked about a potential retirement destination, he named Villarreal, his first professional club, as a sentimental choice.

“Villarreal would be a good place [to retire],” he added.

As it stands, Rodri remains firmly entrenched at Manchester City, where he continues to be indispensable under Pep Guardiola. However, with just two years left on his contract, the timing of Madrid’s reported interest could be significant.

While City will be keen to tie down their star midfielder with a new deal, the lure of returning to Spain and potentially joining Real Madrid might present a tough decision.

For now, fans can only speculate as Rodri expertly balances his loyalty to City with his openness to future opportunities.

One thing is clear: whether in sky blue or the iconic white of Madrid, Rodri’s influence on football’s biggest stages isn’t fading anytime soon.
