Manchester United are reportedly stepping up their interest in Sunderland wonderkid Chris Rigg, with Crystal Palace also vying for the signature of the talented 17-year-old.

Rigg, who has been in fine form for Sunderland this season, is regarded as one of England’s brightest young prospects.

A Rising Star at Sunderland

Rigg has been pivotal for Sunderland in the Championship, contributing three goals in 14 appearances as the Black Cats sit atop the table. Despite his young age, the attacking midfielder has already cemented himself as a key player under Sunderland boss Regis Le Bris.

The England U18 international, who boasts seven caps for his national side, signed a three-year contract with Sunderland last summer. However, interest from Premier League clubs has not waned. Manchester United and Crystal Palace are both keen to bring Rigg into their ranks, viewing him as a potential long-term asset.

Manchester United’s Youth Recruitment Strategy

Since Sir Jim Ratcliffe’s minority takeover, Manchester United have intensified their focus on acquiring top young talents. This summer alone, they secured Leny Yoro, 19, and Arsenal academy sensation Chido Obi-Martin, 16. Rigg has been on United’s radar since early 2023, and their desire to sign him has only grown stronger.

A summer move appears likely, although United could accelerate their plans if competition heats up. Rigg’s current contract complicates an immediate transfer, but his rising stock may prompt United to act sooner rather than later.

Crystal Palace’s Interest

Crystal Palace also see Rigg as a key addition to their youthful squad. Palace’s growing reputation for developing young players could make them a compelling option for the teenager, adding intrigue to the battle for his signature.

Sunderland’s Standpoint

Regis Le Bris, Sunderland’s manager, is keen to keep Rigg and fellow starlet Jobe Bellingham—brother of Real Madrid and England superstar Jude Bellingham—at the Stadium of Light for as long as possible. Le Bris recently shared his thoughts on the importance of nurturing young talent:
“It is better this way; it means you are doing well. They are very young and playing very well. For now, they are in the right zone for their career development. They need to play, learn, and grow in a collective style.”

Le Bris emphasized that both players are thriving under Sunderland’s system and cautioned against rushing moves to bigger clubs before they’ve fully matured as players.

What’s Next for Rigg?

While Manchester United are unlikely to make any major moves in January, a summer transfer for Rigg seems increasingly plausible. However, Sunderland will hope to convince their prized asset to stay longer, arguing that the Championship is the ideal environment for his development.

As the Premier League giants circle, Rigg’s next move could shape the trajectory of his career. Will he remain with his boyhood club to continue his growth, or will he make the leap to the top flight and take on a new challenge?

The summer transfer window promises to be decisive for Chris Rigg’s future—and for the clubs eager to secure one of England’s brightest talents.
