Reece James’ captaincy at Chelsea has come under scrutiny, with Troy Deeney questioning the decision due to the player’s persistent injury setbacks.
The English full-back, appointed skipper in August 2023 following Cesar Azpilicueta’s exit, has struggled with fitness, managing just 654 minutes of action in 15 months.
After making a brief return before the international break, James faces another spell on the sidelines, leaving Chelsea without one of their leaders.
Deeney, speaking to talkSPORT, expressed doubts over Chelsea’s choice: “The most damning thing you can say about Reece James is that you’re surprised when he’s on the teamsheet. It’s unfortunate, but some players just seem to break down constantly. I thought it was strange to make him captain, given he’s rarely fit.”
The former Watford striker likened James’ situation to that of Jack Wilshere, suggesting that prolonged injuries could force him into lesser roles or clubs, potentially jeopardizing his career.
“Within two years, he could be out of the game. It’s a shame because he’s clearly talented, but you need to be fit and available,” Deeney added.
Despite the challenges, James remains optimistic, addressing fans on Instagram: “Another challenge ahead accepted. Eventually, I’ll come out on top, against all odds.” His determination resonates with Chelsea supporters, but questions linger about his long-term future at the club.
With Enzo Maresca managing a young squad, James’ absence leaves a leadership void that could influence the team’s performance in the crucial weeks ahead.
