Chelsea star Cole Palmer, who has become a pivotal figure for the Blues, recently revealed his admiration for Wayne Rooney, the Manchester United and England legend he idolized as a child.

Despite his rise through Manchester City’s academy, Palmer was a Red Devils fan growing up and often sought to replicate Rooney’s iconic goals.
Reflecting on his childhood in Wythenshawe, the 22-year-old shared, “If Rooney scored on the weekend, I’d go out and see if I could do it,” recounting how he practiced in Hollyhedge Park. Even now, when passing the park, Palmer takes a moment to reminisce about those formative days.
Since his move to Chelsea last year, Palmer has enjoyed a meteoric rise. In his debut season in west London, he racked up 25 goals and 15 assists, and this campaign has been just as impressive, with seven goals and five assists in just 13 games. As Chelsea prepares to face Leicester City, Palmer aims to extend his fantastic form.
Rooney’s influence, as Manchester United’s and formerly England’s all-time top scorer, clearly shaped Palmer’s eye for goal. The former United captain won numerous accolades at Old Trafford, including five Premier League titles and the Champions League.
While Palmer now lives in Surrey, he admits to missing Manchester but appreciates the quieter lifestyle down south. “Manchester’s better,” he quipped, “but it’s quiet here, with no distractions.”
Interestingly, Palmer’s connection to Manchester United legends doesn’t stop at Rooney. David Beckham, another Old Trafford great, reached out to the Chelsea star last season.
Palmer recalled, “Beckham messaged me after I scored. I saw him in my DMs.” Although Beckham’s playing days predated Palmer’s prime viewing years, the gesture added to the young star’s surreal journey in football.
Having quickly become a crucial player for Chelsea, Palmer’s rise reflects the lessons learned from emulating Rooney’s brilliance and the inspiration of football icons. From Wythenshawe to Stamford Bridge, his journey continues to captivate fans.
