Musa, 32, recently returned to Kano Pillars for his third stint, and his impact has been immediate. The former Leicester City winger has netted five goals this season, showcasing his determination and form in the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL).

Super Eagles defender William Troost-Ekong, often the team captain in Musa’s absence, highlighted Musa’s continued importance to the national side.

“We’re happy he’s back,” Troost-Ekong said during a press conference in Uyo ahead of Nigeria’s 2025 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying fixture against Libya. “He’s still our captain and a great leader. I’m proud to deputise for him.”

Divided Opinions

Despite his club success, Musa has not featured for the Super Eagles since the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations in Côte d’Ivoire, leading to debate over his continued role in the squad.

Speaking to Softfootball.com, Lawal, a member of Nigeria’s historic 1996 Atlanta Olympics gold-winning team, said:

“Eguavoen is best positioned to decide Musa’s place. Scoring five goals in a challenging league like the NPFL proves his hunger and determination. It’s remarkable, given the league’s competitiveness.”

Musa’s Leadership at Kano Pillars

Musa’s return has been transformative for Kano Pillars. The team, currently sixth in the NPFL table, remains unbeaten in their last four matches under coach Usman Abdallah. Lawal praised Musa’s influence, especially on younger players.
