The Bayer Leverkusen striker has failed to score in twelve appearances for the national team, with his recent performances in the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers coming under scrutiny.
However, his club form has been impressive, with six goals and one assist in ten Bundesliga matches this season, following a standout campaign last year with 21 goals and 10 assists.
Boniface’s Struggles: A Common Pattern for African Players
Lawal defended Boniface, explaining that it is not unusual for players to struggle to replicate their club performances on the international stage, particularly in African competitions.
He pointed out that even legendary players like Nwankwo Kanu, who had a long international career without scoring in the Nations Cup, faced similar challenges. Lawal stressed that Boniface’s inclusion in the Super Eagles is essential, as dropping him could lead to further questions, especially if the team lost without him.
He believes Boniface’s goal-scoring form will soon return for Nigeria, urging critics to be patient and continue supporting the player.
