The young Everton supporter from Sydney, Australia, saved his hard-earned money for a dream trip to witness the Merseyside derby at Goodison Park, only for his plans to be thwarted by severe weather.
Storm Darragh forced the postponement of the iconic fixture, leaving Mackenzie with bittersweet memories of his journey.
A Dream Journey Cut Short
Mackenzie Kinsella had always dreamed of watching Everton play their fierce rivals Liverpool at Goodison Park before the historic ground makes way for the new Bramley-Moore Dock Stadium next season.
Against his mother’s initial hesitation, Mackenzie saved enough money to make the long journey from Sydney to the UK.
His efforts paid off as he witnessed Everton’s emphatic 4-0 victory over Wolves earlier in the week. Yet, his ultimate goal was to experience the electric atmosphere of the Merseyside derby, a match that would have been Goodison Park’s final showdown between the two rivals.
Tragically, Storm Darragh brought chaos, forcing officials to declare the surrounding areas unsafe for fans, staff, and players, leading to the game’s postponement.
Safety Takes Precedence
Everton released an official statement explaining the decision, made after consultation with safety officials, local authorities, and the police. Strong wind gusts and an amber severe weather warning made it impossible to ensure everyone’s safety.
The club apologized for the inconvenience caused and promised fans that tickets for the original fixture would remain valid for the rescheduled match.
Mackenzie’s mother, Rita, shared her son’s story on BBC Radio Merseyside, expressing her pride in his determination to follow his dream. She admitted she initially doubted his plans, but his commitment and resourcefulness convinced her to let him make the trip.
Whether Mackenzie will return for the rearranged fixture remains uncertain, but his unwavering passion for Everton shines through this disappointment.
