Aaron Ramsey has opened up about his decision to reject Manchester United in favor of Arsenal, a choice that led to one of the most dramatic transfer snubs of Sir Alex Ferguson’s career.
The former Wales international was a highly sought-after prospect in 2008, with several Premier League clubs, including United, Arsenal, and Everton, vying for his signature.
Speaking about the pivotal moment, Ramsey shared how close he came to joining the Red Devils, with the club even announcing the transfer on their official website. However, the deal fell through after Arsène Wenger personally intervened to secure the young talent for Arsenal.
“It was a mad time for me as a 17-year-old,” Ramsey told Optus Sport. “I had voicemails from Sir Alex Ferguson, went to David Moyes’ house, and then flew on a private jet to meet Arsène Wenger while he was working at the Euros. It was surreal for a boy from Cardiff.”
The then-teenager’s decision to snub Manchester United didn’t sit well with Ferguson. “When I told him I wasn’t signing for United, I don’t think he was best pleased,” Ramsey admitted. “But I definitely made the right choice in signing for Arsenal.”
Ramsey’s 11-year career with Arsenal is remembered fondly by fans. He made over 300 appearances and played a crucial role in ending the club’s nine-year trophy drought. His extra-time goal in the 2014 FA Cup final against Hull City secured the silverware, cementing his legacy in Arsenal’s history.
“Winning that FA Cup was massive,” Ramsey said. “There was so much pressure on the team to deliver after so many years without a trophy. It felt incredible to finally achieve that.”
The midfielder also contributed significantly to Arsenal’s 2015 FA Cup victory over Aston Villa and the 2017 triumph against Chelsea, where he scored decisive goals.
Reflecting on these moments, Ramsey praised Wenger’s ability to maintain Arsenal’s competitiveness during challenging times.
“With the new stadium and financial constraints, what Wenger did to consistently deliver Champions League football and FA Cup wins was unbelievable,” he said. “People appreciate that more now than they did at the time.”
