AC Milan have decided against making Joao Felix’s loan move permanent this summer after his disappointing spell in Italy. The 25-year-old forward arrived on loan from Chelsea in January, hoping to revive his career, but he has failed to make a significant impact under Sergio Conceicao.

Felix’s time at Stamford Bridge had already been underwhelming, as he struggled to win over Enzo Maresca and managed just three Premier League starts before his mid-season departure. His Milan debut offered promise, with a goal in a 3-1 Coppa Italia victory over Roma, but his form quickly faded. He has yet to register a goal or assist in Serie A, raising doubts about his long-term future.

His struggles extended to the Champions League, where he failed to make a difference as Milan were eliminated in the last 16 by Feyenoord. According to La Gazzetta dello Sport, Felix has faced challenges adapting to an environment plagued by instability at San Siro. While it may be unfair to label him a complete flop, the club expected far more from a player of his talent.

Milan’s hierarchy have reportedly concluded that Felix’s move is not working out, making it unlikely they will pursue a permanent deal. Instead, the Portuguese forward will return to Chelsea at the end of his loan, though his future at the club remains uncertain. The Blues initially invested around £46 million in Felix after a brief and unconvincing loan spell in 2022/23, but he has yet to live up to expectations.

Felix remains under contract at Chelsea until 2030 after signing a long-term deal upon his return from Atletico Madrid last summer. However, with Chelsea’s squad undergoing continued restructuring, it is unclear whether he will be part of their plans next season. His inability to cement a place at either Chelsea or Milan leaves his next move up in the air.

At his Milan unveiling, Felix had expressed his desire to stay beyond this season if the opportunity arose. He spoke highly of the club, its facilities, and the atmosphere at San Siro, describing his warm reception as a highlight of his move. Despite his struggles, he hoped to continue with the Rossoneri if the conditions were right.

However, with Milan moving on and Chelsea seemingly uncertain about his role, Felix’s future remains in limbo. Whether he stays in London, seeks another loan, or finds a new permanent home, he faces another crucial summer in his career.
