Former Green Eagles and Stationery Stores midfielder, Adebayo Gbadebo, who now coaches in Thailand, has urged the Super Eagles to treat their upcoming clash with Rwanda as a stepping stone for future success.

Speaking to softfootball.com from Bangkok, Gbadebo reflected on Nigeria’s 1-1 draw with the Cheetahs of Benin Republic in their 2025 AFCON qualifying match, labeling it a crucial “learning curve” for the team and Head Coach Augustine Eguavoen.
Benin Game: A Tough Wake-Up Call
Mohamed Tijani put Benin Republic ahead just 17 minutes into Thursday’s encounter at the Felix Houphouet-Boigny Stadium in Abidjan. Despite Nigeria dominating play, it wasn’t until the 81st minute that Victor Osimhen headed home the equalizer, securing the Super Eagles’ place atop Group D and confirming their qualification for the 2025 AFCON finals in Morocco.
“The early goal and harsh weather conditions were unexpected hurdles,” Gbadebo observed. “The team must learn to prepare thoroughly, especially against smaller teams.”
Super Eagles’ Progress Commended
Gbadebo expressed delight at the team’s early qualification, praising the atmosphere and commitment fostered under Eguavoen’s leadership.
“I congratulate the Super Eagles for their qualification,” Gbadebo stated. “This spirit hasn’t been in the team for a long time. Kudos to the coach for reigniting competition and camaraderie among the players.”
However, he emphasized that complacency was evident during the Benin game, warning that the Eagles underestimated their opponents.
“Benin Republic gave 120%, while we played at 90%. This must change. Every opponent deserves respect and meticulous preparation.”
Looking Ahead to Rwanda
Gbadebo turned his focus to Monday’s “dead rubber” match against Rwanda in Uyo, noting the opportunity for the Super Eagles to refine their game ahead of World Cup qualifiers next year.
“This match isn’t just a celebration of qualification,” Gbadebo said. “It’s a chance to showcase that Nigeria is ready to dominate African football again.”
Despite Rwanda’s desperation to keep their AFCON dreams alive, Gbadebo is confident in the team’s capabilities.
“Rwanda will come fighting, but our home advantage and depth should see us through. Still, we must remain focused and disciplined.”
A Message for Eguavoen and the Team
Gbadebo concluded with encouragement for both the players and coaching staff.
“Coach Eguavoen’s experience is invaluable, and I trust he’ll use these qualifiers to sharpen the team for future challenges. Injuries aside, the squad depth is promising, and I believe the Super Eagles can end the year on a high note.”
