Atalanta manager Gian Piero Gasperini has thrown his support behind Nigerian winger Ademola Lookman, suggesting he is a strong contender for this year’s Ballon d’Or. Lookman stands out as the sole African player included in the prestigious 30-man nomination list, thanks to his exceptional performances with both Atalanta and the Nigerian national team.
The 26-year-old began the year on a high note, playing a pivotal role in helping the Super Eagles reach the finals of the Africa Cup of Nations in Côte d’Ivoire. His outstanding contributions were crucial in leading Atalanta to a top-four finish in Serie A, which secured their spot in the UEFA Champions League.
Lookman’s crowning achievement came during the Europa League final, where he made history by scoring a hat-trick in Atalanta’s 3-0 victory over Bayer Leverkusen. This remarkable feat not only clinched the title but also marked Atalanta’s first-ever European honour.
Not one to rest on his laurels, Lookman has kicked off the 2024/25 season in remarkable form, netting two goals and providing two assists in just four Serie A matches. His contributions extend to the Champions League as well, where he has scored two goals in two appearances.
On the international stage, Lookman continues to impress, tallying two goals in three Africa Cup of Nations qualifying matches. He even had a stunning goal ruled out for offside against Libya, a decision that many believe was incorrect.
While Lookman has made waves, he faces stiff competition for the Ballon d’Or, particularly from Real Madrid’s Vinicius Jr. and Manchester City’s Rodri. Despite this, Gasperini remains adamant about his choice: “My personal Ballon d’Or vote would go to Ademola Lookman.
