This transition, though difficult, was something Lookman felt drawn to. He initially hoped to join Nigeria’s squad for the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), but his switch was delayed due to FIFA’s ratification process. When his move was finally confirmed, Lookman’s skills quickly impressed both fans and analysts.

In the 2023 AFCON, he delivered notable performances that showcased his control, speed, and technical skill on the field. His contributions were pivotal to Nigeria’s success and bolstered his reputation as a talented forward who adds depth and agility to the Super Eagles’ lineup.

Reflecting on his journey, Lookman revealed that the support of his teammates, especially Victor Osimhen, was instrumental in making his transition seamless. He appreciated the warm and welcoming nature of the Nigerian team, with players like Osimhen helping him feel part of the squad.

Osimhen often speaks to Lookman in Yoruba, encouraging him to respond in the language and embrace the culture, which has not only strengthened their bond but also helped Lookman feel more at home in Nigeria. He considers his ability to reply in Yoruba a personal accomplishment and a symbol of his deeper connection with the team.

Lookman also spoke about the pride he feels representing Nigeria. Wearing the Nigerian badge, he remarked, is both an honor and a responsibility. He credits the sense of unity and purpose within the team as a driving force behind their accomplishments at AFCON. Beyond language, he sees the shared dedication and pride in their Nigerian heritage as key factors that bind the team, making every victory and achievement even more meaningful.

As he continues to impress both at his club, Atalanta, and with the Nigerian national team, Lookman has become a contender for the prestigious CAF Player of the Year award. His excellent form, commitment to improvement, and seamless integration into the Super Eagles have made him a favorite among fans. Looking forward, he remains focused on contributing to Nigeria’s quest for more silverware, determined to bring home trophies for his country.
