Benin Republic defender Cédric Hountondji has been ruled out of the Cheetahs’ squad for the upcoming 2025 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers due to a hamstring injury.

According to the Benin Football Federation, Hountondji, who plays for Angers in France, sustained the injury while preparing for Benin’s recent encounter against Rwanda.

His absence is expected to impact the team’s defensive line as they gear up for the decisive Group D qualifiers.

Currently, Benin holds second place in Group D with six points from four matches, trailing behind Nigeria.

Head coach Gernot Rohr’s side will need strong performances in the remaining fixtures to ensure a spot in the Morocco-hosted AFCON 2025.

The Cheetahs will face Nigeria next Thursday at their temporary home ground, the Felix Houphouet-Boigny Stadium in Abidjan, before traveling to Libya for a crucial away game four days later.
