Chelsea entered the season with little expectation after a tumultuous summer that saw Enzo Maresca take over as manager and another chaotic transfer window. Following a disappointing sixth-place finish under Mauricio Pochettino last season, many expected the Blues to struggle again under Maresca.
After being outclassed by Manchester City on the opening weekend, Chelsea have defied expectations, losing just once in their next 15 games.
They currently sit second in the league, with 34 points from 16 matches, and their tally of 37 goals is the highest in the Premier League.
Despite their impressive form, Shearer remains skeptical. Speaking on The Rest is Football podcast, he said, “I’m not convinced Chelsea will stay where they are by the end of the season. I could be wrong, but I think Liverpool are the team to beat.”
Liverpool, under new manager Arne Slot, have been sensational this season and currently top the table, two points ahead of Chelsea and four clear of Arsenal.
Shearer praised Slot’s impact, saying, “Slot has done an amazing job. Liverpool have so many options across the pitch and are strong in every position. I can’t see them slipping up.”
Former West Ham manager David Moyes echoed Shearer’s sentiments, backing Liverpool to claim their first title since 2020.
“It’s hard for me to admit, but Liverpool just look like they can hurt teams in so many ways,” Moyes said. “They might have a wobble, but they’ve got the firepower to overcome it.”
Even Gary Lineker, host of Match of the Day, is betting on Liverpool to finish the season as champions, highlighting their consistency under Slot, who has seamlessly replaced Jurgen Klopp.
This weekend, Liverpool face a tough test against Tottenham, while Chelsea and Arsenal, their closest challengers, take on Everton and Crystal Palace, respectively. All eyes will be on how the league’s top three navigate the busy festive period.
