Premier League legend Alan Shearer has hailed Arsenal goalkeeper David Raya as “one of the best in the Premier League” since his move from Brentford in 2023.

Despite initial skepticism, Raya quickly replaced Aaron Ramsdale as Arsenal’s first-choice keeper and has played a vital role in the Gunners’ defensive success.

Last season, Arsenal boasted the best defensive record in the league, and Raya’s consistent performances have led many to consider him among the top goalkeepers in the world.

Shearer acknowledges Raya’s impressive form but believes he still has to prove he’s better than Manchester City’s Ederson and Liverpool’s Alisson.

“When you look at what Ederson does for Man City and Alisson at Liverpool, I wouldn’t say Raya is the best in the Premier League yet. There’s no doubt he’s up there, though, as one of the best,” Shearer told Betfair.

Raya has shown strong ball-playing abilities, which aligns with Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta’s vision of a goalkeeper who can contribute to building play from the back.

Raya’s performances in both the Premier League and Champions League have been crucial for Arsenal’s title chase. Shearer credited Arteta for taking the bold decision to bring in Raya and challenge Ramsdale, which initially sparked controversy.

“When Arteta signed him, and he went up against Ramsdale, it didn’t feel right. But you’ve got to give Arteta credit because it certainly worked out for the better,” Shearer added.

The Spaniard’s ability to make key saves has also saved Arsenal valuable points this season.

Looking ahead, Arsenal will aim to continue their strong start as they visit Bournemouth, with Raya expected to be key in maintaining their defensive form. Arsenal has conceded only six goals in their opening seven league games, trailing only behind Liverpool and Manchester City in the title race.

Shearer also turned his attention to another critical figure in Arsenal’s title ambitions, Bukayo Saka. The 23-year-old has been in superb form this season, contributing two goals and seven assists in the league so far.

However, there were concerns over his fitness after he missed England’s Nations League match against Finland during the international break. Arteta has since confirmed that Saka is expected to be fit for Arsenal’s next game, much to the relief of fans.

Shearer emphasized how crucial Saka’s availability is for Arsenal’s title challenge, especially with team captain Martin Odegaard also dealing with an injury.

“It would be a huge blow for Arsenal’s title hopes if Bukayo Saka is out for any length of time, especially with the injury to Martin Odegaard as well,” Shearer said. Losing both Saka and Odegaard would be a significant setback for the Gunners.

Saka’s energy, skill, and attitude make him an essential player for both Arsenal and England. Shearer expressed hope that Saka’s injury is not severe and noted that Arteta’s positive update suggests the winger could soon return to action.
