Ally McCoist has expressed his desire to see Frank Lampard take charge at Rangers, believing the former England and Chelsea star could follow in Steven Gerrard’s footsteps. Lampard, currently managing Coventry City in the Championship, has impressed since taking the role.
Since joining Coventry, Lampard has overseen a remarkable turnaround. When he arrived, the club was 17th in the league, but after 19 games, they have won 12, drawn three, and lost four, climbing into the play-off places. Their recent 3-2 victory over Stoke marked their ninth win in 10 league games, a feat last achieved in 1954.
Rangers are currently under interim management, with Barry Ferguson taking charge after Philippe Clement’s dismissal. Clement was sacked in February after a poor domestic run left Rangers 13 points behind Celtic, effectively ending their title hopes.

McCoist believes Lampard would be a perfect fit for Rangers, especially after Steven Gerrard’s success at Ibrox. Gerrard led the club to a Scottish Premiership title in 2020-21, and McCoist thinks Lampard has a similar hunger and determination to succeed.
McCoist was surprised by Ferguson’s appointment but insists he supports whoever takes the role. He acknowledged that Clement’s European performances were promising but felt his domestic results, particularly against Queen’s Park and Motherwell, made his dismissal inevitable.
With new ownership changes at Rangers, McCoist expects the managerial position to attract strong candidates. He hopes the club secures the right leader to restore Rangers’ domestic and European dominance.

Aside from Lampard, McCoist mentioned other candidates, including a potential return for Gerrard, as well as Rafa Benitez and Derek McInnes. He believes McInnes understands the club well but questions whether his opportunity has passed.
