Manchester United took the lead early in the second half through Joshua Zirkzee, but a Mikel Oyarzabal penalty in the 70th minute ensured the Europa League last-16 tie remains level heading into the second leg at Old Trafford. The Red Devils controlled large portions of the match but struggled towards the end, with Sociedad missing key chances to claim victory.

Garnacho started brightly, creating opportunities but failing to capitalize on them. As the match progressed, his influence waned, prompting Amorim to replace him with Christian Eriksen in the 78th minute. The manager clarified that the decision was purely tactical, stating that the winger was fatigued and unable to contribute defensively as expected.

However, former United midfielder Paul Scholes disagreed, suggesting Garnacho was sulking rather than exhausted. Scholes noted the winger’s lack of energy and decision-making, emphasizing that his strength lies in direct running and penetration. He urged the young Argentine to improve, particularly given United’s limited attacking options.

Rasmus Hojlund, who played the full match, extended his goalless run to 19 games. The Danish striker was visibly frustrated in the first half when Diogo Dalot opted not to pass to him in a promising attack. Despite the ongoing struggles in front of goal, Amorim praised Hojlund’s work rate and encouraged him to remain patient.

Amorim acknowledged the team’s eagerness to score but noted that anxiety may be affecting their decision-making. He defended Dalot’s choice in that particular moment, suggesting the full-back might not have been certain of Hojlund’s positioning. However, he emphasized the importance of moving on rather than dwelling on missed opportunities.

United now turn their attention to the return leg at Old Trafford, where they will look to capitalize on home advantage. With the tie finely balanced, Amorim will hope his squad can produce a more clinical performance to secure a place in the quarter-finals.

As the pressure mounts, both Garnacho and Hojlund will be expected to step up, proving their worth in a squad that has struggled for attacking consistency this season. Their performances in the upcoming games could be crucial in shaping United’s European ambitions.
