Among the fresh faces catching Amorim’s attention are promising defenders Jack Kingdon and Godwill Kukonki, who could be in contention for Thursday’s match.

Amorim’s first game at the helm—a 1-1 draw with Ipswich Town—saw United deploy a 3-4-3 formation but highlighted the team’s defensive frailties due to multiple absences. With Lisandro Martinez, Harry Maguire, Victor Lindelof, and Leny Yoro unavailable, Amorim turned to Noussair Mazraoui, Matthijs de Ligt, and Jonny Evans as his back three. Luke Shaw also made his season debut during the match, replacing Evans in the second half.

Amorim’s defensive woes might open the door for Kingdon, 19, and Kukonki, 16, to make their mark. The duo remained in Manchester while United’s U19 squad traveled to the Netherlands for a UEFA Youth League tie against AZ Alkmaar, signaling their potential inclusion in the senior squad.

Jack Kingdon: A Rising Star in United’s Academy

Jack Kingdon has been a standout performer in Manchester United’s youth setup since joining from Morecambe at age 15. Now 19, the 6ft 1in defender is noted for his pace, leadership, and tactical awareness.

Having captained Scotland at the U18 level, Kingdon played a pivotal role in United’s U18 treble-winning season last year. He has continued his development with six Premier League 2 appearances this term and was integrated into first-team training under Erik ten Hag.

Godwill Kukonki: A Towering Defensive Talent

Godwill Kukonki, at just 16, has drawn comparisons to Manchester City’s Josko Gvardiol thanks to his left-footed versatility and commanding 6ft 5in frame. Primarily a centre-back, Kukonki has also excelled at left-back and has been instrumental for United’s U18s, contributing to a stellar defensive record of seven clean sheets in nine league matches.

Although Kukonki did not make the matchday squad against Ipswich, his inclusion in the traveling party was a clear recognition of his progress and potential. His adaptability and composure make him a promising candidate for Amorim’s preferred back three system.

A Chance to Shine

With Amorim looking to solidify his squad and cope with ongoing injuries, Kingdon and Kukonki may find themselves thrust into the spotlight. Their involvement would align with Amorim’s reputation for trusting young players—a hallmark of his managerial career.

As Manchester United navigates a congested schedule, the inclusion of these talented youngsters could provide valuable depth and experience, potentially signaling the start of bright futures at Old Trafford.
