Spurs were heavy favourites against a team that had yet to secure a Premier League win this season, but Ipswich stunned the home crowd with two first-half goals from Sam Szmodics and Liam Delap.
Tottenham’s Rodrigo Bentancur pulled one back in the 69th minute, but it was not enough to mount a comeback.
Postecoglou expressed his disappointment after the match, acknowledging the team’s poor start that left them with a steep hill to climb. “It’s hugely disappointing. We started slow and passively, and we gave ourselves a mountain to climb. In the second half, we had chances, but we didn’t do enough to win the game,” he told BBC.
He emphasized that the lack of consistency from his players is down to him, saying, “I take responsibility. I’m the person in charge, so that’s usually the way it goes.”
This defeat marks Tottenham’s fifth loss of the season, leaving them in 10th place in the Premier League. While European aspirations are still alive, any hope of a title challenge seems distant. With the international break now upon them, Spurs won’t play again until November 23, when they face Manchester City.
Ipswich, on the other hand, were elated by their historic win, their first in the Premier League in 22 years, lifting them to 17th place in the standings. Delap, who starred with a goal, spoke of the significance of the victory, saying, “It means so much. We’ve put in so many great performances and just lacked that final bit.”
Ipswich manager Kieran McKenna celebrated the triumph, praising the club’s improvement since their promotion and stressing the importance of validating their progress with such a massive result. “This is a massive moment, one to cherish,” he said.
