Brighton had taken an early lead with a goal from Ferdi Kadioglu, and Liverpool faced further adversity when Ibrahima Konate was forced off due to injury just before halftime.
Gomez replaced Konate, marking just his second Premier League appearance this season, and his performance was key in turning the tide for the Reds.
Slot acknowledged Gomez’s influence during the match, stating, “The good thing is we have two very good replacements in Joe Gomez and Jarell Quansah. I chose Joe today because Jarell was really tired, and he proved I was right because he was outstanding in the second half.”
Gomez displayed impressive defensive capabilities and stepped into midfield to regain possession effectively. “He had a very good performance without the ball,” Slot continued.
“He constantly stepped into midfield to win the ball, winning the duels, and when he had to defend, he did very well. Very good second half.”
The manager emphasized Gomez’s mindset and professionalism, praising his ability to perform at such a high level despite limited playing time. “It says a lot about his mentality and quality if you don’t play that much and come in to perform like this after your teammates were outplayed for 45 minutes.”
Gomez himself expressed satisfaction with his contribution and readiness to play. “You have to be ready,” he remarked.
“Every time you are on the bench, you’re not just a spectator; you know you are here to participate and do your job. It’s great to be part of the team and get a win.”
With this victory, Liverpool moved back to the top of the Premier League table, and they will quickly turn their attention to their upcoming Champions League match against Bayer Leverkusen on Tuesday.
The team aims to maintain their momentum and capitalize on other teams dropping points in their pursuit of success this season.
