Unai Emery has sent a clear warning to Arsenal, West Ham, and other suitors interested in Aston Villa striker Jhon Duran as the January transfer window nears its close.
The 21-year-old Colombian has been a hot topic of speculation after limited game time this season.
While Duran has scored 12 goals in 28 appearances, he has only started four Premier League games, with Ollie Watkins consistently leading Villa’s attack.
Duran joined Aston Villa in a £17m deal, beating West Ham and Chelsea to his signature. Now, West Ham has reportedly reignited their pursuit, tabling a £57m offer. Arsenal has also entered the race, with Mikel Arteta aiming to reinforce his frontline before the window shuts.
Despite the rumors, Emery remains adamant about keeping Duran. After Villa’s 1-1 draw with West Ham, he acknowledged the distractions but reiterated his confidence in the striker.
“The circumstances right now make it hard to stay fully focused,” Emery told Sky Sports. “But Jhon Duran is our player, and I want him here with us.”
Duran’s uncertain future has sparked debate among football analysts. Jamie Carragher, former Liverpool defender, believes Villa should cash in on the young forward.
“I’d sell Jhon Duran,” Carragher suggested. “You could get an extra £10m for him. Clubs often sell older players like Watkins in this situation, but Duran’s potential makes him highly valuable.”
Carragher also highlighted the challenges of managing two top strikers, comparing the situation to Tottenham’s struggles in finding a backup for Harry Kane. “You don’t get the best out of Watkins knowing Duran is waiting for 15 to 20 minutes of play,” he explained.
Aston Villa’s performance against West Ham reflected their ambitions, as Jacob Ramsey’s goal was canceled out by Emerson Palmieri in a 1-1 draw. Emery remains optimistic about the team’s trajectory, aiming for European competition.
“We started this part of the season well with two wins and two draws,” Emery said. “We’re ambitious and want more. We’ll use the last week of the transfer window to strengthen and keep building our quality performances.”
With Emery standing firm, Aston Villa faces a crucial decision as Arsenal and West Ham ramp up their efforts to land Duran before the deadline.
