Arsenal’s January transfer window search for a new striker led them to consider a surprising option—former Chelsea forward Alvaro Morata.

During their trip to Spain for a Champions League clash with Girona, Arsenal officials held discussions with the representatives of Espanyol goalkeeper Joan Garcia. During these talks, they also inquired about Morata, who shares the same agent as Garcia.

Despite interest, Arsenal were only open to a loan move for the 32-year-old. Milan were prepared to let him leave, but Arsenal ultimately missed out as Galatasaray made a more decisive pitch. The Turkish club’s approach convinced Morata, who has previously played for Juventus and Atletico Madrid.

Arsenal’s hesitancy in the market could prove costly, as they remain in contention across three major competitions. With no new attacking reinforcements, the responsibility of leading the line falls largely on Kai Havertz. The German has faced criticism for missed chances in crucial games but managed to score in Arsenal’s emphatic 5-1 win over Manchester City.

As Arsenal gear up for their Carabao Cup semi-final second leg against Newcastle and continue their Premier League title push, questions remain over whether their lack of transfer activity will impact their season.

Mikel Arteta, speaking after the window closed, remained focused on the team’s upcoming matches. When asked about potential signings, he said:

“I don’t know, my phone has been off with the transfer window—no calls, no texts. My focus has been on preparing for Wednesday.”
