Arsenal Legends Harsh Critique of Martinelli and Jesus Sparks Debate

Emmanuel Petit has openly questioned the ability of Gabriel Martinelli and Gabriel Jesus to contribute at the level required for Arsenal to secure the Premier League title.

Arsenal, who have come agonizingly close to winning their first league title since 2004 in recent seasons, are once again falling short. Despite Manchester City struggling in sixth place, Liverpool has surged ahead, sitting eight points clear at the top as 2025 begins.

Petit attributes Arsenal’s struggles to a lack of squad depth and inconsistent performances from key players like Martinelli and Jesus.

Once hailed as one of the Premier League’s brightest talents, Martinelli’s progress appears to have stalled, according to Petit. Meanwhile, Jesus ended a lengthy goal drought last month with a five-goal burst over two games but has failed to show consistent quality.

“Arsenal looked nervous at the start of the season,” Petit told Ladbrokes. “They made silly mistakes and dropped points unnecessarily.

The lack of discipline, including avoidable red cards, has cost them dearly. And when you lose players like Martin Ødegaard and Bukayo Saka – your two best players – it becomes extremely difficult to compete.”

Petit emphasized the contrast between Arsenal’s and Liverpool’s squads, pointing out the depth and quality Liverpool boasts in attacking positions.

“Liverpool has incredible options up front. If you compare the two teams, it’s clear Arsenal’s strength fades when key players are missing,” Petit remarked.

He specifically criticized Martinelli and Jesus for failing to step up in critical moments. “I’ve been waiting for some players to hit the next level, but I’m frustrated.

Take Martinelli, for example. He had a good game against Crystal Palace recently, but that’s not enough. Look at how Saka has grown to become one of the Premier League’s best. When will we see that from Martinelli?”

Petit also expressed dissatisfaction with Jesus, adding, “He’s played well in recent games, but that level of performance isn’t consistent enough to win titles. Arsenal needs players who can deliver regularly, especially when their stars are out injured.”

With the January transfer window approaching, Petit urged Arsenal to bolster their squad. “Mikel Arteta has done a fantastic job, but the team has reached its limit. They need fresh blood, new energy, and better options to compete with Liverpool and other top teams.”

Petit didn’t hold back in questioning the club’s decisions regarding contract extensions. “I’m tired of seeing players getting four- or five-year deals without proving themselves. Arsenal isn’t a mid-table club. The expectations are higher, and if you can’t meet them, the club must make tough decisions.”

Despite his harsh words, Petit acknowledged Martinelli’s potential. “He’s still young and can bounce back, but playing regularly isn’t the issue. It’s about showing more on the pitch and taking responsibility.”

Arsenal’s next challenge comes on Wednesday as they face London rivals Brentford in the Premier League. Whether Martinelli and Jesus can rise to the occasion remains to be seen.
