Mikel Arteta may soon offload a midfielder as Arsenal finalize a deal for Real Sociedad’s Martin Zubimendi, set to join the club this summer.
The Gunners have reportedly reached an agreement to sign the 25-year-old La Liga star at the end of the season.
Zubimendi, a key player in Spain’s Euro 2024 victory, turned down a Liverpool offer last summer and has also been linked with Manchester City.
With Jorginho and Thomas Partey’s contracts expiring soon, Zubimendi could step in as their replacement. Former Premier League player Craig Burley believes this move indicates Arteta is ready to part ways with Mikel Merino, who joined Arsenal for £32m last summer but has struggled to make an impact.
If Zubimendi arrives, Merino may find himself behind both his former Sociedad teammate and England star Declan Rice in the midfield hierarchy.
Speaking to ESPN, Burley emphasized Arsenal’s need for a striker as they chase Liverpool at the top of the Premier League.
“Liverpool might drop a few points, but Arsenal need something extraordinary. A new striker doesn’t guarantee success, but it improves their chances,” he said.
Arsenal, he noted, knew their lack of a natural goalscorer could hinder their title bid. While Zubimendi strengthens their midfield, Burley believes addressing the striker position remains crucial.
Zubimendi, a Sociedad stalwart with over 200 appearances, explained his decision to stay at the club despite interest from Liverpool. “I’m happy here and felt it was the right choice. I see great potential in this team,” he said.
Liverpool, now six points clear at the Premier League summit, continue to dominate in the Champions League as well. Meanwhile, Manchester City, another Zubimendi suitor, sits sixth, with their title hopes fading.
Arsenal, currently third, face a critical north London derby against Tottenham. A challenging start to 2025, including an FA Cup exit and Carabao Cup struggles, has underlined their need for reinforcements, with Zubimendi seen as a key addition to Arteta’s squad.
