Arsenal have triumphed in the pursuit of Real Sociedad’s star midfielder, Martin Zubimendi, fending off competition from Manchester City and Liverpool.
The Gunners have reportedly agreed on a £51 million deal, but the 25-year-old will remain with Sociedad until the summer, according to Mail Sport.
Arsenal initially aimed to accelerate Zubimendi’s arrival, but Sociedad remain firm in retaining one of their key players for the remainder of the season.
This deal adds to Arsenal’s history with Sociedad, having already brought in former players Martin Odegaard and Mikel Merino. Additionally, Arsenal are eyeing a summer move for Alexander Isak, another former Sociedad talent.
Despite the signing, Arsenal are currently without a sporting director following Edu’s abrupt departure in November. The Gunners have also been linked with Sociedad’s director of football, Roberto Olabe.
Zubimendi nearly joined Liverpool last summer before deciding to stay with his boyhood club. Recently, Manchester City emerged as serious contenders for the midfielder, who was a cornerstone in Spain’s Euro 2024-winning squad.
However, Pep Guardiola’s side will now have to look elsewhere as the Premier League champions focus on rebuilding their midfield following Guardiola’s own contract extension.
Arsenal’s fanbase remains anxious for attacking reinforcements, especially after the announcement of Gabriel Jesus’ season-ending knee injury.
Addressing the media ahead of the North London Derby, Mikel Arteta reaffirmed the club’s active involvement in the transfer market.
“Our approach hasn’t changed. We’re constantly looking for opportunities to strengthen the squad,” Arteta stated. “Every transfer involves three parties, and we work within our limitations, but that doesn’t mean we’re complacent. We’re always aiming to evolve and improve the team.”
Arteta emphasized the importance of taking advantage of every opportunity to enhance the squad. “We love our current players, but it’s our responsibility to ensure we have the resources to compete at the highest level,” he concluded.
