Kai Havertz missed a crucial penalty during Arsenal’s FA Cup shootout defeat to Manchester United, but the aftermath of the game turned even darker when his wife, Sophia, became the target of vile online abuse.
Despite numerous chances, including missed opportunities from Havertz and Declan Rice, Arsenal couldn’t secure a win during regulation or extra time.
The game ended 1-1, leading to penalties, where Havertz’s effort was saved by Altay Bayindir, contributing to United’s 5-3 shootout victory.
As Arsenal fans expressed their frustrations online, some crossed the line, directing shocking threats at Havertz’s wife, Sophia. She took to Instagram to reveal the disturbing messages she received during the match.
One message chillingly read: “I hope you have a miscarriage,” while another even threatened harm to her unborn child: “I’m gonna come to your house and slaughter your baby, I’m not joking, just wait.”
In response to the appalling abuse, Sophia posted screenshots of the messages, writing: “For anyone to think it’s okay to write something like this is so shocking to me. I hope you are ashamed of yourself. I’m not sure what to even say, but please, guys, be more respectful. We are better than this.”
Havertz’s manager, Mikel Arteta, defended his player, emphasizing his faith in the squad despite the disappointing result. “To him and to all of them, I love them,” Arteta said.
“What this team produces every three days is incredible. What can we do better? Let’s try to do it, but we must not lose sight of their immense effort.”
Arteta also acknowledged the emotional toll of such moments, particularly in high-pressure games, while reiterating the importance of confidence for players like Havertz.
The incident has reignited calls for stricter measures against online abuse in football, highlighting the toxic environment often faced by players and their families after high-stakes matches.
