Arsenal have released a surprise statement confirming that Jonas Eidevall has resigned as head coach of the women’s team. The news comes after a challenging start to the season for the Gunners, who have managed just one win in their opening four Women’s Super League (WSL) matches.
First Team Assistant Coach Renée Slegers will step in as Interim Head Coach while the club begins its search for a permanent replacement. Eidevall, who joined Arsenal from FC Rosengard in June 2021, led the team to two League Cup titles and the semi-finals of the Champions League in 2023.
Despite past successes, recent performances have been disappointing. Arsenal suffered a 5-2 defeat to Bayern Munich in the Champions League and a tough loss to Chelsea in the WSL, which appears to have sealed Eidevall’s fate.
Sporting Director Edu Gaspar expressed gratitude for Eidevall’s contribution, stating, “We thank Jonas for his commitment and the role he has played in the growth of Arsenal Women. We wish him all the best for the future.”
Director of Women’s Football Clare Wheatley echoed Edu’s sentiments, acknowledging the Swedish manager’s impact: “Jonas has brought us trophies and many memorable moments. We wish him and his family health and happiness.”
Renée Slegers will lead the team in two crucial fixtures this week, starting with a Champions League clash against Valerenga on Wednesday, followed by a WSL encounter with West Ham this weekend.
