Saka, sidelined following a hamstring surgery, faces months away from action. The injury, sustained during Arsenal’s win against Crystal Palace before Christmas, is a major setback for the Gunners’ title ambitions. Yet, Arsenal showed resilience, narrowing the gap to league leaders Liverpool with a decisive performance in west London.
Brentford initially took the lead through Bryan Mbeumo, scoring against the run of play. However, Gabriel Jesus equalized before halftime, netting his sixth goal in four games.
Arsenal turned the match on its head shortly after the break, with Mikel Merino bundling in a corner and Martinelli smashing home following a cross from Ethan Nwaneri.
Speaking to TNT Sports, Martinelli downplayed any extra pressure on the team, stating: “No one can replace him [Saka]. He’s one of the best players in the world. But we trust ourselves and will always give our best. I’m sure he’s happy with the result.”
Gabriel Jesus, also instrumental in the win, praised Arsenal’s grit at Brentford’s Gtech Community Stadium. “The team did amazing today. The most important thing is getting three points, but how we reacted was just as crucial,” Jesus said.
He added that Arsenal is fully capable of challenging Liverpool, saying: “We’ve been in the fight the past two years, and we’ll keep fighting again.”
Arsenal legend Martin Keown, who had expressed concerns about their title hopes, applauded the team’s determination. “Arsenal sent a strong message with this win. They’re alive and kicking in the title race,” Keown said.
Despite being six points behind Liverpool, who have a game in hand, Arsenal’s comeback win boosts their confidence as they prepare to face Brighton at the Amex Stadium this Saturday.
