Arsène Wenger has expressed his disapproval of England’s decision to appoint Thomas Tuchel as the new national team manager. Following Gareth Southgate‘s resignation after the European Championships, England’s FA took months to select Tuchel, despite considering other candidates.

While Wenger acknowledges Tuchel’s credentials as a successful coach, he believes a national team manager should always come from the same country they represent. Wenger shared that, despite receiving offers to coach other nations, including England, he consistently declined as he felt uncomfortable managing any country other than France. He stated, “I’ve always believed a national team’s manager should be from the country.”
Wenger emphasized that he wasn’t personally interested in managing a national team due to the limited number of matches each year and said, “Tuchel is a perfect coach, but he is not English. Though allowed, I find it essential for national identity.”
Tuchel’s Response on Singing ‘God Save the King’
When asked if he would sing England’s anthem, God Save the King, Tuchel remained undecided, explaining that he has great respect for the anthem and would take his time before making a decision.
The German manager is set to take charge of the Three Lions in January as they begin preparations for the 2026 World Cup.
