Arsenal secured Merino’s services from Real Sociedad over interest from top clubs like Atletico Madrid and Barcelona, but his debut was delayed due to a shoulder injury sustained in his first training session.

After limited appearances, Merino made his full debut in Arsenal’s shock 2-0 defeat to Bournemouth, struggling to make a significant impact. However, Arteta remains confident that the 28-year-old Spain international will play a pivotal role in Arsenal’s season.

“He’s a player with an unbelievable football brain and leadership skills,” Arteta said, emphasizing the midfielder’s long-term value to the team. “He’s going to deliver big things once he’s fully up to speed.”

Merino, who is set to feature in tonight’s Champions League clash against Shakhtar Donetsk, expressed the importance of moving on from the Bournemouth loss, focusing on improvement. With Premier League leaders Liverpool looming this weekend, Arsenal has little room for error.

“It’s good to have another game quickly after a loss,” Merino said. “We need to win, learn from our mistakes, and give our best version.”
