Mikel Arteta has acknowledged that Arsenal face a tough challenge after being drawn against PSV Eindhoven in the Champions League last 16.

The Gunners impressed in the league phase, winning six of their eight matches and finishing third overall. With the second-best defensive record heading into the knockout stage, Arsenal are considered strong contenders for the title, though bookmakers still favor Liverpool, Real Madrid, and Barcelona over them.

The draw, held in Nyon, Switzerland, paired Arsenal with Eredivisie champions PSV in what promises to be an exciting battle for a quarter-final spot.

The two teams are familiar foes, having met in last season’s group stage, where Arsenal secured a dominant 4-0 victory at the Emirates before settling for a 1-1 draw in Eindhoven.

Speaking on the matchup, Arteta admitted PSV will be a formidable opponent. “We’ve played against them before, and they are a very good team. We know it will be a difficult challenge, just like any other team at this stage,” he said. PSV earned their place in the round of 16 after a thrilling play-off win over Juventus.

Before their European showdown, Arsenal must first focus on domestic duties. They host West Ham at the Emirates, aiming for a fourth consecutive Premier League win. A victory would close the gap on league leaders Liverpool to five points.

Injury concerns remain for Arsenal, with key players Bukayo Saka, Kai Havertz, Gabriel Jesus, and Takehiro Tomiyasu still unavailable. “No real updates. The long-term absentees remain out, and there’s no new good news,” Arteta confirmed. However, there’s a boost in defense as Ben White, sidelined since November with a knee injury, is now fit and available.

Looking ahead to the Premier League clash, Arteta expects a difficult test against West Ham despite their recent struggles. “It’s going to be tough. If we get the result, we’ll of course keep an eye on the Manchester City vs. Liverpool game on Sunday,” he added.

When asked if he’ll be watching the title rivals face off, Arteta remained focused on his own team. “Right now, I’m fully concentrated on our game. I only relax watching matches that don’t affect our ability to win big trophies,” he said.
