Mikel Arteta has firmly rejected the idea of recalling Raheem Sterling to Chelsea to make room for another Premier League player on loan.
With Bukayo Saka and Gabriel Jesus both sidelined by serious injuries, Arsenal’s attacking options are running thin. While Saka is expected to return soon, Jesus’ season ended early after knee surgery.
Arteta has relied heavily on Leandro Trossard and Gabriel Martinelli in wide positions, especially with Ethan Nwaneri recently returning from injury.
Sterling, who has struggled to find form in recent matches, was underwhelming in Arsenal’s 3-0 win over Dinamo Zagreb.
With goalkeeper Neto also on loan from Bournemouth, Arsenal cannot sign another Premier League player unless they cut short one of their current loan deals.
Arteta was clear when asked about this possibility, responding, “We are not thinking about that.”
Despite links to several forwards this month, including Benjamin Sesko and Alexander Isak, both seem unlikely to join in January.
Matheus Cunha is attracting interest from Chelsea, Tottenham, and Nottingham Forest, but his preference remains unclear.
Arteta emphasized the need to strengthen his squad, especially with the team still in the Premier League title race and nearing the Champions League last 16.
However, Arteta acknowledged the limitations Arsenal faces, stating that any new recruit must meet specific criteria. “We have to balance our resources and develop players from the academy.
We lost two key forwards, and we need more goals,” Arteta said. “If we find the right player, we’ll act, but we won’t settle for just anyone. We need help.”
