Mikel Arteta has decided to postpone contract discussions with Thomas Partey and Jorginho, despite both players entering the final six months of their current deals. The seasoned midfielders are set to play pivotal roles as Arsenal navigates a challenging and potentially season-defining phase.
Currently competing in four tournaments, Arsenal is pushing Liverpool in the Premier League title race while aiming for Champions League success. Partey has been particularly impressive recently, showcasing versatility in midfield and covering at right-back due to injuries to Ben White and Takehiro Tomiyasu.
Jorginho, though used sparingly, has been entrusted with the captain’s armband in several matches and is expected to feature prominently in upcoming domestic cup fixtures.
Addressing their contract situations, Arteta remarked, “These clauses exist, so it’s a possibility. We maintain open communication to align our intentions with their aspirations. Both players bring immense value, and I’m thrilled with their contributions. For now, our focus is solely on the season ahead.”
While Arteta expressed a desire for both players to stay, he emphasized the importance of timing, stating, “What matters is where they stand mentally and their long-term plans. We’ll revisit these discussions when the time is right.”
Meanwhile, Arsenal’s future looks promising with the emergence of academy talents Myles Lewis-Skelly and Ethan Nwaneri. Nwaneri, stepping in for Bukayo Saka against Brentford, has proven his readiness for first-team action.
Arteta, often criticized for underutilizing academy prospects, seems determined to change this perception. “Our priority is always the academy,” he explained. “If the talent exists internally, we use it. If not, we adapt players or look to the market. These young players aren’t just filling gaps—they’ve earned their place.”
As the Gunners tackle a packed schedule, their blend of experience and youth might be the key to unlocking success.
