Unai Emery is banking on Marco Asensio and Marcus Rashford to propel Aston Villa’s FA Cup campaign after their impressive display in a 2-0 victory over Cardiff. Asensio, scoring twice one set up by Rashford has quickly become a key figure since his January loan move, while Rashford has assisted three of his four goals.
Rashford, still a Manchester United player, is reportedly open to extending his stay at Villa Park beyond the summer. Emery, however, is simply delighted to see him enjoying football again and values his presence in the squad.
Emery praised his squad’s chemistry, emphasizing how well players are adapting to their roles. “They’re finding spaces, handling challenges, and improving together,” he said. “I’m thrilled with their performances and how they’re settling in.”
Though Emery initially downplayed Villa’s FA Cup chances, the exits of Liverpool, Arsenal, and Chelsea have shifted the landscape. “We’ve reached the quarter-finals, something we haven’t done in years,” he said. “Stronger teams like Man City, United, and Newcastle remain, but this tournament offers a route to silverware, European football, and a chance to inspire our fans.”
Asensio, in red-hot form, is eager to push further as Villa readies for a Champions League clash with Club Brugge. “I feel at home here,” he said. “The team and staff trust me, and I want to contribute even more.”
His link-up with Rashford has been crucial, with the English forward assisting three of his four goals. “Marcus is an excellent player,” Asensio added. “Though we haven’t played together long, I already understand his style. This squad has what it takes to achieve great things.”
